The recent release of footage released by the Pentagon detailing unexplained flying objects, or UFOs, may have you rethinking alien life and UFOs. Or, it may be the fuel for your next creative art project with your kids. There are so many ways to envision your next  d.i.y. Before you get started it’s important to gather your supplies.

DIY Upcycled Alien Spaceship Art Craft Supplies

Expand your child’s imagination through creating an upcycled alien spaceship. Below are the items that you’ll need:

  • Plastic or paper plates (2 for each spaceship)
  • The bottom halves of plastic soda bottles (1 for each spaceship)
  • Several plastic bottle caps
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Googly Eyes
  • Pom Pom Balls of various sizes (1 large and 3 small for each spaceship)
  • A hot glue gun
  • Scissors

Now it’s time to create your alien. Before you get started, don’t make the alien so big that it won’t fit in the cup. The alien will be placed inside the cup on top of the ship.

Gather the felt pom pom balls, googly eyes, and pipe cleaners that you will use to create your alien’s legs.

Step 1 – Glue on the eyes

With a heated hot glue gun, glue googly eyes to the small pom poms. These will be the alien’s eyes.

Step 2 – Glue to the bigger pom pom

Take the 3 eyes you just made and glue them to the top of the larger pom pom in a row.

Your alien head should look something like this:

Step 3 – Make the legs

Now we’re going to create your alien’s legs. Take a piece of pip cleaner and fold it in half to make a V shape. Then fold the ends to make little feet. Set the legs aside – we’ll need these later!

Step 4 – The Mouth

Cut a tiny piece of pip cleaner and shape it into an O to make the alien’s mouth. Glue it on.

Step 5 – The spaceship

While your alien dries you can assemble the spaceship. Glue the two plates together to create the ship. Ideally, the plates are bright colors. If not, you and your child could paint the plates if you have white paper plates at home.

Step 6 – Glue on the alien

Glue the bent part of your “feet” you made earlier to the top center of the ship. These are going to hold the alien onto the space ship so make sure they’re securely attached. You may need to hold them in place for a few seconds while the glue sets.

Once you have the feet attached, glue the alien on. Make sure your alien isn’t too tall for the plastic bottle!

Step 7 – Glue the bottle on

Put a bead of hot glue around the rim of your pop bottle and glue it so the alien is inside.

Step 8 – Decorate it!

Decorate the outside of your ship by gluing bottle caps around the edge of the ship. You can also use gems, stickers, or anything else you and your kids want!

There’s more than one way to make an alien! Now that you’ve created your upcycled DIY alien project, check out the following bonus projects that you can create with the same supplies that you used to create your ship.

Some other ideas for supplies to make DIY alien spaceship crafts

  • Googly Eyes – These are a fun addition to any art project
  • Slime – You could also decide to make the slime with as a fun rainy day project too.
  • Face paint – Parents can turn their little ones into aliens with a flick of the wrist
  • Paper plates – Do you have left over plates from your last BBQ? Grab a couple for alien art fun.
  • Tin Foil – I couldn’t resist! But, aluminum foil is typically in every kitchen cabinet.
  • Clean old socks – If you have a couple of socks missing it’s matching pair, pull them out for your project.
  • Washable Marker – Make sure to get the washable marker because sometimes kids are inspired to draw on spaces they aren’t supposed to.
  • Crayons – Hopefully, your child has a massive box of crayons to color with.
  • Popsicle Sticks – In between making homemade Popsicles use a couple for art.
  • A hot glue gun
  • Toilet paper rolls – I know that you have a ton of extra rolls in the house.
  • Bottle Caps
  • Glue gun

Now that you’ve collected your art supplies, it’s time to brainstorm the different types of projects that you would like to play around with.

Human Aliens

Have fun transforming your child, or children, into an alien. Take inspiration from funny aliens from their favorite cartoon or show and recreate your favorite alien. Paint their faces, change their outfit, add some fun accents to their outfit and enjoy.

Sock Puppet Aliens

Grab your sock and place some googly eyes on it. Then, add tin foil, pipe cleaners and other items to make your sock puppet alien unique.

Toilet Paper Aliens

These are super easy to create and easy to do. You and your child can color, paint, and design your toilet paper aliens to your heart’s content.

D.I.Y. projects like this alien art craft for kids don’t need to be complicated and are a fun and easy way to be creative when you can’t get outside.
